The island of Korčula

THE ISLAND OF KORČULA is the most populated and densely forested Middle-Dalmatian island with a fragmented coast and mild Mediterranean climate. It is 47kn in length, with an average width of 6.5km, an area of 280 km², and is separated from the mainland by the Pelješac Canal. Twelve kilometres from Lumbarda, passing through the town of Korčula, by the seaside road and heading in a westerly direction is Račišće, located in a protected cove on the northern side of the island. Vele Luka is situated in a deep cove on the western side of the island, while the larger remaining settlements Žrnovo, Pupnat, Čaru, Smokvicu i Blato are situated in the middle region of the island and connected by a road, and offering beautiful tourist lookout points next to the Pelješac Canal and the open sea. These settlements are located on the slopes of the hills surrounding vineyard fields and olive groves, each of them in a unique way witnessing to tumultuous history on the islands through its architecture and preserved traditional customs, with the knight dances being particularly interesting. The coastline with its protected coves contains numerous fishing ports which in recent times have become increasingly urbanised and orientated towards tourism.
