The island of Mljet
THE ISLAND OF MLJET is located to the east of the island of Korčula, and can be accessed from Lumbarda or Korčula by hydrofoil boat in about half a hour or by a tourist chartered boat in an hour and a half. The Mljet National Park on the western part of the island has made Mljet famous due to its unique beauty. The park contains Great and Small salt lakes (Veliko I Malo slano jezero). On the small island on the Great Lake is located a Benedictine monastery with a Romanic church dating from the 12th century. Even though it has not been scientifically proven that bathing in the salt lakes is therapeutic, it is a great experience after a hike or bike ride along the lake path and through the centuries old pine forest.
